Ray Jackson's connection to Tenaha began in 1978, when he moved to the community as a freshman at Tenaha High School, following in the footsteps of his father, Coach Raymond Jackson.
During his high school years, Coach Ray was active in athletics and Future Farmers of America (FFA), and he even contributed to the school yearbook by taking and processing photographs. His dedication to both academics and extracurricular activities was evident from an early age, and in 1982, he graduated as the valedictorian of his class.
After high school, Coach Ray attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy for two years. However, he soon discovered that his true passion was teaching and coaching. He transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University where he pursued that calling.
In 1986, Tenaha welcomed Coach Ray back home as a part-time aide and coach while he attended SFA in the mornings. Two years later, in 1988, he became a full-time teacher and coach, beginning what would become an extraordinary 40-year career in education and service to the Tenaha community.
Throughout the 1990s, Coach Ray helped lead Tenaha football to more than 80 victories, including two appearances in the State Championship. His impact, however, extended far beyond the football field. He dedicated himself to his students, his athletes, and the school he had once attended as a young man.
In 2001, Coach Ray transitioned from coaching into the field of technology, continuing to serve Tenaha in a new capacity. Although he officially retired in 2022 after 36 years of service, Tenaha wasn't quite ready to let him go. He returned as a part-time Technology Director, continuing to share his knowledge, experience, and commitment with the district.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Coach Ray's greatest pride is his family. He married his wife, Vera, in 2005, and together they have two daughters, Brianna and Yana, as well as two grandchildren, Kaylee and Bailey.
Coach Ray Jackson's life reflects a remarkable legacy of dedication, leadership, education, and service to Tenaha. From student and athlete, to teacher and coach, to technology director, he has spent decades giving back to the community that became his home.
Coach Ray feels especially honored to join his father, Raymond Jackson, and his brother, Randy Jackson, as a member of the Tenaha Hall of Honor.
Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Coach Ray Jackson into the Tenaha Hall of Honor.
