Mrs. Teresa Wiist
Welcome to Mrs. Wiist's classroom. I'm SO excited that you have found my page. This is the first step in staying in touch with our classroom environment. On this page, you will find links to important sites we will use in class, a general curriculum calendar for each class, helpful links (Study Island, Khan Academy, JLab, etc.), and important class announcements.
I have been teaching kids math since 2004. Math and reading are two of the most important core concepts that should be mastered in order to continue your successes. Everything in math builds on prior knowledge. It's YOUR job to be very vocal in class so I know exactly what is giving you trouble. It's MY job to fill in those gaps so you will have a very solid mathematical foundation to build on!
This year I will be teaching 6th Grade Math Enrichment, 7th Grade Math, 7th Grade Math Enrichment, 8th Grade Math and 8th Grade Math Enrichment.
In addition, I stay for Zero Hour each afternoon, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 4:00 to help with all math subjects. Zero hour is a great way to get help on homework, make up missing work/quizzes/etc., complete Study Island or Khan Academy assignments, or just get help on a concept that you didn't quite grasp the first time around!
In our classroom, the only mistake you can make is NOT correcting your mistakes! All homework, quizzes, and tests can be corrected and resubmitted for regrading. Nothing in math ever happens by accident... you have to know how and why your answer is right. That's why corrections and showing your work are both SO important. Math is like a journey, and your work is your roadmap. But, like any journey, it doesn't matter HOW you get there (the right answer), as long as YOU know how you got there and can reach that point again in a similar problem. There is not just ONE WAY to do any math problem, as long as YOU can tell someone WHY it's correct!
So, here's what you will need to remember:
* Do your homework, you never master anything without practice!
* Always show ALL your work
* Correct your mistakes
* Ask questions if you don't understand
* Come to class prepared
Now, here's a little bit about me...
First, I am married, have four grown daughters, and live on Lake Murvaul. I love to fish and work in my yard! Two of my other favorite things to do are taking photographs and watching birds. I have a dog named Elsie and a cat named Honey. I collect TOO many things, LOL (or at least that's what my husband tells me!). I have one bedroom that is FULL of Coca~Cola stuff, have collected tons of old glassware, and my yard has plants galore.
Second, I absolutely LOVE math! I have a business degree (BBA) from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas and also received my post-bac teacher certification from MSU. I am certified to teach all levels of mathematics, Early Childhood (EC: PreK) through 12th grade. I also have a General Education certification for all subjects EC-4th grade and a Science certification for 4th through 8th grade.
Next, I don't like folks who can't tell me the truth! It takes a lot more guts to Fess-up than it does to Cover-up!
Last, and most important, I value trust and respect. Both are very fragile... so easy to destroy and so hard to rebuild.
I can be reached by email or phone. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. I'm looking forward to another GREAT year at Tenaha ISD!
